Ten Johns Hopkins University mathematicians have been named Fellows of the American Mathematical Society for 2013, the program’s first year. The designation recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and utilization of mathematics.
The inaugural class of 1,119 fellows represents 600 institutions worldwide, and the fellows from Johns Hopkins are: William P. Minicozzi II, Bernard Shiffman, Christopher D. Sogge, Joel Spruck, W. Stephen Wilson and Steven M. Zucker, professors in the Department of Mathematics at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences; J. Michael Boardman, Jun-Ichi Igusa and Takashi Ono, professors emeritus, also in the Krieger School’s Department of Mathematics; and Edward Scheinerman, a professor in the Whiting School of Engineering’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.
“The new AMS Fellows Program recognizes some of the most accomplished mathematicians — AMS members who have contributed to our understanding of deep and important mathematical questions, to applications throughout the scientific world and to educational excellence,” said Eric M. Friedlander, president of the AMS.
